So long, Fred Chalenor

Bassist Fred Chalenor, who performed with Bill Rieflin, Robert Fripp, Matt Chamberlain, Hector Zazou and Pete Buck as part of the Slow Music project in 2005 and 2006 died last month.

Fred, who collaborated with many players including ex-Soft Machine bassist Hugh Hopper, composer Wayne Horowitz as well as his Caveman Shoestore project passed away on 23rd June aged 62.

He’d been suffering from early onset Alzheimer's disease though had continued to play bass until near the end. Paying tribute to him, his friend, drummer Henry Franzoni said, “He practiced his craft 6-9 hours a day for 40 years, always moving forward, evaluating life in terms of whether or not he was making musical progress. He digested musical styles like hamburgers, eating one, then another, using them to develop truly original music. Being with Fred was like going to a Dojo; studying a martial art; and kicking ass.” There's a longer tribute and career appraisal from Fred's colleague, Courtney Von Drehle.
